Can you paint a wood front porch when it is very cold?
December 12th, 2009 at 10:26The paint is peeling off my front porch railing and I need to paint it. I don’t know if painting in very cold weather will work. How long do I need for it to dry?

probably a few hours, as long as it isn’t frozen you should be fine…apart from cold hands

Most paints i have worked with over the years. will not cure out very well in cold, and damp weather. You will problem get particals of dust and dirt in it before it sets up.

you should only paint when its above 50 degrees
and dry conditions.
you could paint in any condition but the level of protected materials will diminish
i have painted in 30 degree weather before and the paint finish was horrible but i imagine it did help to protect the wood a little but its very unlikely
stick with above 50 degrees in dry conditions and you should do fine.
you will need 24 to 48 hours to get the best bond

If you’re not to store materials below certain temperature’s then you can’t use certain materials and achieve the results you want. The manufacturer usually states the temperatures (best time to use). You should wait until warmer, dryer temps. for best results. I think if you scrape and paint it now, it will pop off when the temps. change. You’ll have to scrape and paint later.

Yes their are products for painting in the cold. But wait till it is warmer out. THe job comes out so much better and you are not rushing the job. When it is warm out scrape the surface and use a penetrating oil primer to lock down the surface. THen top coat with an acrylic semi gloss paint
