the hot water in my house turns cold very fast ever since it started getting cold outside?
December 8th, 2009 at 21:36what could be wrong? Normally our hot water may run cold if some one is running the hot water out by washing clothes, taking showers or baths or from the dishes..now the water just gets cold for no reason..what could be the problem?

Several things here.
Your pipes may need to be wrapped and you can get a blanket for the hot water heater if it is older…it will help. http://i.ehow.com/images/GlobalPhoto/Articles/5257083/304636_Full.jpg
When a water heater sits all night with out being used, the water cools down some. Turn on hot faucet when you 1st get up and let run 5 minutes to "wake up thermostat" then give it 15 minutes before getting in shower.
If the hot water heater is +10 years it may be on it’s way out.
You should BLEED the tank yearly if you have not done this the past few years it’s time to do it…Sediment builds in the tank and contributes to it’s inefficiency. There is a safe and slow way to do it, by turning off the water to the heater and removing both vacuum breakers and then opening the drain cock to hot water heater you can now drain it, which can take about 1 hour.

You might need to turn the hot water heater’s temperature up.

to add to the good answers you already have, sometimes in an electric water heater, one of the heating elements will fail. there are usually two. easy for a plumber to check with a meter. or if your handy and have an ohmmeter , check it yourself. if you have a bad element then you need to to determine if the cost of replacing it is worth it compared to the age of the heater and its expected lifespan.
