The other thing you could do (but please don't just use cold water) is add a sterilising agent, here in UK we have a product called Napisan (we call diapers nappies) that you can use to soak the nappies in before washing and you can then add some to the washing machine (together with regular detergent). Remember what these items are used for and that should answer your question about hygiene. I would say no, no and no again.
