Is it still possible for my oven toaster to be restored after it was drowned in dirty water?

Our house was flooded a week ago due to a storm. Most of our appliances were drowned, including my new oven toaster, is it still possible to use it?

Depends on whether it has mechanical controls or electronic controls. If you want to try, spray it down with clean water inside and out to make sure you get all the mud and dirt out of it. Set it aside to dry thoroughly for several days. If you have an outside electrical outlet I would use that to test it for the first time, not in the house in case something bad happens.

Before plugging it in, set the oven to "wam" or low temperature, then plug it in, carefully watching the oven to see if there are any sparks or smoke. Unplug immediately if you see evidence it is doing anything but warming up. If it looks like it is running OK, leave it plugged in for 10 minutes and check the temperature of the oven ( placing an oven thermometer inside first would be a good thing to check the temp with).

If it is mechanically controlled oven, the only thing that could really go wrong is the thermostat could stick because of dirt or rust, and that would cause the oven to overheat – that is why I suggest checking the actual termperature with an oven thermometer. Overheating could cause a fire of course.

It will depend on how insulated your wires and heating elements were. Take it apart as much as you can and let it dry out completely. When you put it back together, plug it in an outlet that won’t be harmed if it blows a circuit (such as a garage or basement).
