Hybrid gas / heat pump system. Is it wise to consider the wear and tear on a heat pump as you decide?

October 4th, 2009 at 19:46

…. which is financially better for you to be using — the gas furnace or the heat pump — to heat your house?

My point is, the more often you use your heat pump, the quicker it will wear out and need replaced.

Any insights?

I guess I’m trying to gauge how many years a heat pump in regular use lasts compared to a gas furnace in regular use.

For starters, a gas furnace with air conditioning is usually cheaper to buy and run than a heat pump. Heat pumps are only good for locations with no gas available. They also don’t do as well in very cold locations as compared to milder climates.

The cooling coils in a heat pump seem to be the weak link in the system. Our current house is 13 years old and we are on our third cooling coil. The cooling coil being the one in the air handler that provides cooling in the summer and heat in the winter.

We owned out last house for 25 years and the furnace lasted for about 20 years before the heat exchanger needed to be replaced due to cracks.
